Google Photos was initially announced four years ago in May of 2015 and since then over the last four years has amassed 1 billion users as reported by Fast Company.
At that time Google Photos, Google’s photo and editing service, was separated from Google+, Google’s social network. It gave users free, unlimited storage for their photos up to 16 megapixels and videos up to 1080p resolution.
Google Photos is the company’s ninth tech product to reach the 1 billion user mark joining in on the ranks of Android, You Tube, Gmail, Google Maps as well as Google Search.
Compared to these other services though, Google Photos reached this massive user target in a relatively short amount of time. After five months of its initial announcement at the Google I/O 2015 conference, which brings together developers for an immersive, two-day experience focused on exploring the next generation of technology, mobile and more, Google Photos received over 100 million monthly users followed by 500 million just two years after it was launched.
Google Photos is one of the stock applications that comes on every Android device, however, despite this it was not guaranteed it would be a success four years ago. Especially since it was a spinoff of Google+, one of Google’s most public disappointments which shut down earlier this year after only being in operation for 8 years since May 2011.
Fast Company comments that Google Photos separating from Google+ as an app completely on its own was a move in the right direction. It allowed its developers to use some of Google+ best underlying technology without having to be weighted down by Google+’s other less popular features.
In order for the Google Photos team to reach the next mark of 2 billion users, it has introduced, today, a lightweight alternative to the main Google Photos app called Gallery Go. In an interview with Fast Company, Anil Sabharwal, who is Google’s VP who led the creation of Google Photos, comments that since Google Photos has hit this important milestone of 1 billion users, Gallery Go is how they believe it will reach the next billion users.
