Past studies have shown that deep sleep is critical to your cardiovascular health and helping with normalizing your blood pressure, but a new study reveals that during deep sleep toxins are also cleared from your brain – toxins that play an important role in Alzheimer’s disease.
A study published Thursday, Oct. 31, 2019, in the journal Science, concluded that slow brain wave activity during sleep is essential for both maintenance and cognition of healthy brain function which contributes to memory consolidation. The study also found that cerebral spinal fluid during deep sleep also clears away metabolic waste products like plaque from the brain.
Another research review published in 2018 in the medical journal JAMA also concluded that sleep disturbances preventing deep sleep increases the risk for Alzheimer’s disease. The study revealed that people with sleep problems, like sleep apnea, had a 1.68 times higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or some type of cognition impairment. It also revealed that sleep dysfunction may be directly affecting at least 15% of Alzheimer’s disease cases.

In another study carried out by researchers from the University of Michigan and published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, people who were 66 years and older who received a hearing aid right after being diagnosed with a hearing loss were found to be less likely to receive a first-time diagnosis of dementia or depression or receive an injury from a fall during the three years of the study.
A recent study on the effects of deep sleep also showed that having a bad night’s sleep spiked blood pressure during the night and the next day. This study published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, was led by scientists at the University of Arizona and suggests sleep problems increasing a person’s risk for heart attacks, stroke or even cardiovascular disease death.
Researchers of the study said that good long-term health is maintained by not only getting a good night’s sleep but also getting quality sleep. They recommended darkening your bedroom and drawing the curtains especially if your bedroom faces east and to keep your cell phone in another room.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, people with sleep apnea often have compromised heart health. This is because sleep apnea causes multiple disturbances during the night, activating certain chemicals that prevent the body from having extended periods of deep sleep that lower the blood pressure and heart rate. In the 2008 study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, people who were found to have severe sleep apnea had increased risks for stroke, and multiple cardiovascular diseases.
